Picks of Shell and Abalone and Sea Creatures:
So far, I’ve found Shell picks and Abalone only, but I assume there are also other Sea and Lake Critter picks. Who knows, a shark’s tooth, some shaped coral, whalebone, what if someone used cartilage or even dried skin?
The Shell picks I’ve tried were somewhat glassy sounding with a squeaky finish and firm tone with some mellow brightness.
They come fairly thick, but vary in that dimension, some can be very thick but they cannot be too thin or they will break too easily. Shell is a brittle material after all. It is also pretty darned hard. It is like stone, and has similar qualities in tone, with less squeel.
The mother of Pearl is composed of chitin, a calcium carbonate.
Some are very pretty to look at, but they are slippery to hold much like Stone and glass, which they are very similar to, though with more resonance.
As I obtain more of these I’ll review and add them to this site. I already have 3 from one source and I will review them and I plan on getting abalone too for review. A review is coming, and I just got an Abalone too. Very pretty and well crafted.
